THE EERIE JAPANESE PARANORMAL ENTITIES

Spirits are everywhere in japan. Japan’s trains are well known for being extremely crowded, and there are a lot of ghosts that fill Japan’s paranormal dimension to the brim. There are many kinds of spirits in Japan, but there are two main kinds of spirits. These two main kinds are:

The Ghostly Yurei

The yurei are the most familiar since they are much like ghosts. According to Japanese culture, everyone has a soul that is called the reikon. The reikon vacates the physical body, and it goes to a place that is like purgatory since it has to wait until it has a burial and ceremony. When it has a proper funeral and service, it can leave the purgatory-like place to find its ancestors.

Once they have left the purgatory-like place, they will become their family’s guardian spirit and for the family’s future offsprings. Unfortunately, when the death of the person was violent, or they didn’t have a proper burial and ceremony, or if extreme emotions fill their minds, then the reikon will become a yurei. They will then come back to Earth, where it will stay until they get their proper burial and ceremony, or if someone resolves their emotional problems. The yurei will remain forever until they get their ties to the physical world cut. Yurei’ are usually imagined to be young women with long black hair, wearing white clothes, and they only have their body from waist up. Yurei have several types, but here are the main ones:

  • Ubume, is a ghost that was a mother that died during childbirth, which means she makes sure her children are alright, and she often brings her child candy.
  • Seductress, is a female ghost that gets into a love affair with a living human.
  • Goryo, is a ghost that used to be an aristocrat who wants revenge.
  • Onryo, is another ghost who wants revenge, but then came back from the purgatory-like place to fix a wrong that someone has done to them while they were alive.

If you’re wondering where to find the yurei, then stay near where their physical body is or the location of their death. They might stalk people like their lover or killer. You can usually spot them from 2 AM up until 3 AM, which is rumored to be the hour where the link between the physical and spiritual world is most reliable.

The Creatures Known As Yokai

The yokai are creatures and not spirits. They are more like goblins. The number of yokai is extraordinarily high, and they come in almost every shape and size. There are good yokai, neutral yokai, and evil yokai. They have a large number of forms that they can take, from animals to humans, and monsters to objects.

The first recorded mention of the yokai was in a manuscript from China that dated back to the 1st century, but it wasn’t well known until a publication was made by a Japanese in the 18th century, which caused a lot of people to know about the yokai. There are some yokai’ that can transform, which are called Obake. They roam around with no restriction, and an example of one is the Kappa. The Kappa is a mischievous but harmless yokai that looks like a turtle.
